How does Laser Hair Removal work?

Laser Hair Removal works by sending targeted laser energy to hair follicles and disabling them. The laser energy is attracted to the pigment of the hair, and, after a series of treatments, the hair follicle is permanently damaged and the hair is permanently reduced.

    Step 1

Using white pencil markings during Laser Hair Removal, we create gridlines on the skin to keep track of where we have treated. We don’t use black pencils because the black will attract the light energy away from the treated area and can cause skin burns.

    Step 2

More and more men are using laser hair removal so they can stop the daily need for shaving and constant cuts and razor burn. In addition, Laser Hair Removal can sculpt men's beards in their desired style.

Laser Hair Removal for ALL Skin Types + Tones

In the past, you might have heard that laser hair removal was only effective on people with light skin and dark hair. This is no longer true! Today’s modern lasers have made this procedure accessible to people of ALL skin tones. Zapped’s laser services are perfect for all people, no matter your skin type or tone. Our collection of state-of-the-art lasers can be calibrated for all specific skin tones. So, whether you are light-skinned, olive-toned, or dark, we’ve got the zap for you!

    How does it work?

Okay, here’s the full rundown. Laser Hair Reduction uses the dark pigments in the hair shaft to target the hair follicle. The laser generates a laser light that converts to heat upon contact with melanin (dark pigmentation) resulting in the destruction  of the hair’s root. With each session, the laser damages the hair follicle to the point that the follicle becomes dormant. Laser works best on dark hair and light skin due to the contrast in color which allows the laser to see the hair shaft more efficiently. Just like how dark clothing and cars absorb more sunlight and heat than lighter colors, darker hair absorbs more laser light and heat than lighter-colored hair.  However, Zapped’s laser technology is able to bypass surface melanin to safely and effectively treat all skin tones and types. Unfortunately, this laser is not effective on gray or blond hair, which lacks melanin.

Good news! Zapped has three different lasers and can accommodate almost ALL skin and hair types. We have three lasers to choose from. Your Zapologist will select the right laser for you.

Diode Laser - Longer wavelengths designed to avoid superficial skin damage. They are typically the best for coarse hair and work well on darker skin tones.

Alexandrite - Shorter wavelengths designed or lighter skin types or people who burn easily in the sun.

Nd:YAG  - Longer wavelengths designed for dark skin. This laser bypasses the melanin in the skin to penetrate deeper into the hair follicle without damaging or burning the skin.

    Is it safe?

Yes! Lasers have been in use for years, particularly in surgical procedures. The Gentlelase Alexandrite ™ Laser operates using the infrared spectrum of light rather than the ultraviolet spectrum (i.e. sunlight, which can cause skin damage). We also offer Yag laser services for clients with more melanin present in their skin tone. However skin with sun exposure is not ideal as it may cause burning and hypo/ hyperpigmentation.

Whether you’ve had laser hair removal in the past or this is your first time, we require all first-time clients to Zapped to schedule a consultation.

How long does a treatment take?

This is kind of a math problem, but we love it! The quick answer is that the length of your appointment will depend on the size of the area you would like to treat. Treatment times vary from 10-60 mins. But, if you’re a laser nerd, like us, the long answer is that the lasers can pulse as quickly as five times per second, but we generally use two pulses per second. Each pulse of the laser covers an area approximately the size of a dime. Here’s an example: a treatment of an average size male's back can be completed in approximately 45 - 60 minutes depending on the laser.

    How many treatments are required?

There’s a few factors at play. It depends on the area treated, the color, coarseness + density of the hair, pre-existing conditions, skin tone, consistency, hormones and the degree of laser energy appropriate for your skin type. Most clients reach their desired results after 6-12 treatments. Treatments should be spaced about 6 weeks apart.

What about scarring or side effects?

Immediately following LHR, the area of your skin treated may be slightly red. Don’t worry! This disappears in a matter of hours, at most, a day or so. Darker skin types, usually Fitzpatrick 5 & 6, run a higher chance of hyper/hypo-pigmentation. This occurs rarely and is usually due to incorrect pre/post treatment skin care. Both of these conditions generally take a few months to disappear.

    Is it permanent?

Zapped does not claim that the results of its LHR are permanent. Laser is on average a 90%  hair reduction. You should expect long-lasting results with a small amount of regrowth per year. There are a number of factors that determine your results: hair and skin color, the area of the body treated, the level of laser energy used, plus natural changes in the body's hair growth patterns resulting from aging, medications, illnesses, etc.

    Does it hurt?

We’ll be honest, there is some discomfort associated with the procedure. It’s similar to a rubber band snapping against your skin. Numbing creams are an option however, we do not recommend it during your first session. We need to be able to gage your pain tolerance to reduce likelihood of burning or hyper/hypo-pigmentation.

Electrolysis provided in cooperation with Electrolysis of Brooklyn

Is electrolysis safe, effective and approved?

Yes! Zapped offers probe (needle) type electrolysis which is the ONLY safe method of permanent hair removal that is recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

    How does electrolysis work?

The electrologist inserts a very fine, sterile probe alongside the hair in the follicle (don’t worry your skin is not punctured!). A very slight amount of electrical current that produces heat is applied through this probe. The heat reacts with the water in your skin to destroy the hair root, ending further hair growth.

Does electrolysis work with all hair?

Electrolysis literally brings the heat directly to the root of the hair and only destroys the cells that need to be eliminated, leaving your skin untouched.  And since it doesn’t rely on a certain amount of pigment in your hair or skin, it can treat ALL hair and skin colors equally.

    Is electrolysis painful?

There might be some discomfort when inserting the needle, but mostly the zaps of electricity feel like the snap of a rubber band—quick and the pain doesn’t linger. If you’re used to plucking unwanted hairs, it’s about the same pain level. Most clients report tweezing and waxing to be much more uncomfortable than electrolysis treatments!

How long is a typical session?

It depends. An electrolysis treatment length depends on how much hair you have, not the area of your body.

Are all hairs eliminated from one spot after electrolysis treatment?

We wish! But deep, coarse hairs can’t always be eliminated after one treatment. Hair naturally grows cyclically, so new hairs will emerge from a dormant phase and you’ll need several treatments of an area to ensure that all hairs are eliminated.

How long does electrolysis take to achieve permanency?

We tailor our Zapped Electrolysis treatments to your needs. Many factors determine the number + length of treatments required: the condition of your skin to be treated, the sensitivity of your skin, and the number of follicles involved, and even past methods of hair removal can impact treatment. Many clients find weekly sessions of 15-60 minutes to be most effective. The closer you follow our recommended treatment schedule, the more effectively you’ll see unwanted hair disappear forever.

What are the side effects from electrolysis?

Immediately following electrolysis, you may experience slight redness and/or swelling which usually disappears within a few hours. For clients treating an area with a high concentration of hairs this swelling can last 2 or 3 days. Very rarely you may scab or slightly erythema. An ice pack or cold compress can reduce these side effects. For the first 24 hours, it is best to apply the least amount of cosmetics as possible. Be careful with sun exposure! Avoid the rays and apply an SPF of at least 15 every 2-3 hours for maximum results.

What do I do about the hair between electrolysis treatments?

We cannot emphasize this enough: do not pluck or wax!! If necessary, trim the hair with a pair of scissors or nip the hair with a razor (depending on the area). Bleaching is acceptable as long as it’s done the week before your next appointment, allowing the necessary time for any cut hairs from the bleach to be raised enough above the skin’s surface.
