Peels FAQs
-
Peels are chemical treatments that use acids or enzymes to exfoliate and gently remove the damaged, outermost layer of skin. All skin types can benefit from a chemical peel and they are especially useful for those with mature skin and acne.
-
A chemical peel is a type of skincare procedure that uses chemical formula and solution in order to remove the dead top layers of skin from your face and leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and revitalized. Essentially, the chemical formula / solution is applied to your face, and your skin then “blisters”, and peels away. The new skin is smoother and less wrinkled when the old skin is removed.
-
Generally, chemical peels work best for fair-skinned and light haired patients. Patients with darker skin can also have great results, but it is more likely that darker skinned patients will have an uneven skin tone after getting the procedure done. Speak to your Zapologist to get recommendations on which peel will work best for your skin tone and skin type. Be sure to disclose all skin medications, birth control, and skincare products you are currently using so our expert team can best assist you to find the best peel for your skin.
-
Depending on your skin condition and sensitivity, you can get a chemical peel once every 4-6 weeks. These recommendations also depend on the intensity of your chosen peel. For more intense and harsh chemical peels, we advise to wait up to three months. Your Zapologist will direct you based on your skin type and chemical peel type to determine the frequency in which you can get these peels!
-
Depending on the intensity of your chemical peel and your skin sensitivity, following your procedure you can expect a sunburn-like reaction. Peeling usually includes redness and itchiness followed by scaling that usually lasts 3-7 days. With medium or deep chemical peels, you may experience swelling and blisters that may crust and peel off over the course of 1-2 weeks. It is recommended that you protect your newly peeled skin from the sun in the coming months because your new skin will be fragile.
-
Depending on your skin type and intensity of your peel, some may experience a temporary or permanent discoloration or change in skin color after a chemical peel. There is a very low risk of scarring - which can usually be treated. Please alert your Zapologist if you suffer from cold sores, as a chemical peel may reactivate these cold sores.
